The film follows these three kids (one is a black boy) from three families across three chapters of their lives — from childhood through the teen years to young adulthood — and offers a powerful, personal and longitudinal look at the realities of growing up in poverty in the U.S.

Definitely a great doc. Starts in 2010 and then updates every 5 years or so for each kid.

It had some unexpected twists and turns with the updates. One pretty big reveal with one family that I didn't see coming and changed the whole dynamic.

There are quite a few times where it makes you laugh and then hits you right in the feeling. There's a moment where the breh is begging his mom to buy him some Nike's and how they were a steal compared to Walmart pair she wanted that had me dying but then the very next scene, the mother is alone and sheds a tear about not being able to afford things.

Separately, it's kinda mesmerizing to see the kids turn into adults in front of you. Boyhood comes to mind, but the fact that Born Porn Poor is real makes it even harder to look away.

On a related note, one of the scariest thing about the doc is that the spiral for all of the families started with the 08-09 Financial crisis. The doc takes place 15 years later yet everyone is still struggling to stay afloat. The recession fucked up 2-3 generations of people with huge knock-on effects, and we are legit on the edge of a new recession again that will potentially have a similar impact.
