Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 update removes all remaining methods to bypass Microsoft Account requirements during setup, enforcing online sign-in and blocking any possibility of creating local-only accounts during installation https://alternativeto.net/news/2025...-all-microsoft-account-bypasses-during-setup/

@alternativeto Forced MS account creation on Windows should be illegal.As should need for a Google account on Android to install updates or accessibility components, though it can be used.Or Amazon & Kindle.You can setup a Kobo without an account, or use a fake email as user.

33/46

@alternativeto @raymaccarthy on my android phone I now use Aurora Store instead of Play Store. Aurora use anonymous (at) google (dot) com for updating most of the apps on the phone. Unfortunately a few apps won't update, so still need play store.Other store apps include F0droid and Accrescent

34/46
@CarbonCarrot
@jayfell @alternativeto @raymaccarthy On my Android phone i use MicroG and Aurora store for anything that I need because of society, my lack of commitment to free software or peer pressure and get everything else from F-Droid or Obtainium.

@CarbonCarrot @jayfell @alternativeto How does that work for Android accessibility components or Google apps you can't remove?

@jayfell @alternativeto Does Aurora Store work for the accessibility components and for updates to built in Goggle apps you can't remove?Does it work with a phone with no working Google login?If not it, it's only an alternative for extra apps, and Google is to make it that EVERY app has to have developer (ID proved) & app registered with Google to install at all.

37/46
@jayfell@social.trom.tf

@alternativeto So, you pay a licence and that software FORCE you to sign online to use the software you just paid for?Also looking at you, #Apple#GoLuffy

46/60
@TLisaB@zirk.us
@disisdeguey Mac User since System 7 here. I never had to pay (extra) for the OS, nor did I have to open an account with Apple to use my Macs or the OS. Today running macOS 15.7.1, no account, no iCloud.So please enlighten me: What do you mean by "Also looking at you, # Apple"@alternativeto

47/60
@disisdeguey@expressional.social
@TLisaB @alternativeto I meant "signing up" to use your own software. I also have a (second hand) Apple and everytime I need an app or update anything I HAVE to sign up with an Apple account. Wich is annoying and I basically go Luffy. So much control for something you already paid for (and Apple is not cheap though)#GoLuffy

48/60
@TLisaB@zirk.us
@disisdeguey You did something utterly wrong then during setup where it asks you if you want to open an account with Apple. You can easily, without any fuzz, skip this step and you'll have a "no account" machine.@alternativeto

49/60
@disisdeguey@expressional.social
@TLisaB @alternativeto No you can't. If I want to UPDATE my OS I NEED AN ACCOUNT TO DO IT.I didn't set up an account in my computer and now I can't update (I dont) Years ago I had Apple to work on video editing but now that company duck up everything, I just move to Linux and Apple laptop is a secondary option, and nothing else.

50/60
@TLisaB@zirk.us
@disisdeguey Seems you live in another universe. I did the update from 15.6. -> 15.7. -> 15.7.1. recently without any account or nagging about not having an account. Obviously something is very wrong with your setup. But since you start to CAPSLOCK-SCREAM at me, I'll end this discussion here.@alternativeto

51/60
@mihamarkic@mastodon.social
@TLisaB @disisdeguey @alternativeto You don't pay extra for OS because the price in included in your device

52/60
@TLisaB@zirk.us
@mihamarkic That's why I wrote: " I never had to pay (extra) for the OS"@expressional.social @alternativeto

53/60
@narpoleptic@masto.ai
@TLisaB @disisdeguey @alternativeto at a minimum, MacOS X updates for existing systems running older iterations did previously come at a cost - I distincly remember as I had to coordinate upgrade licence purchasing for my workplace for at minimum Tiger through Lion. Wiki suggests that Mountain Lion was the last paid-for release.Been a long while since I tangled with Apple gear as I'm not in support, but I do remember them pushing hard for people to use the App Store & apple accounts ...

54/60
@TLisaB@zirk.us
@narpoleptic I never had any problems updating the OS or the applications without an Apple account. Also, the function to skip creating an account has never been hidden. But: I buy my applications not on a *store of any kind. Companies have websites still ...@expressional.social @alternativeto

55/60
@narpoleptic@masto.ai
@TLisaB @alternativeto I don't remember them forcing it, but they were pushy about it (I guess a standard 30% cut of sales through your platform is a strong incentive to "promote" use of your platform...). But yes, for clarity the paid-for OS updates I was referring to were on-physical-disc copies that we purchased from Apple, and I don't recall there ever being an online account requirement for that.

56/60
@kDelta@mastodon.ie
@disisdeguey @alternativeto Apple do not force you to have an account to use macOS. You may miss out on some services (iMessage, FaceTime) but you can still use your Mac to do whatever you like.

57/60
@digitalstefan@fosstodon.org
@alternativeto I would pay up front for a physical copy of Workstation edition if it had the feature “ability to sign in with an online account must be enabled via group policy” I.e I’ve given you enough money that I am entitled to run completely offline if I so choose.

I would switch to Linux but the majority of my PC games will not work on that OS.

I might have to try this. My only concern is some of my old games I like to play occasionally may not work on Proton. I will have to do more research.

Start here: https://www.protondb.com/

That will get you to a good place for the majority of PC games. Any games with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) will not work unless explicitly enabled by the developer e.g. Fortnite will not work.

@alternativeto Imagine trying to set up Windows 11 offline on an old laptop.

@AleF2050 @alternativeto Why would I imagine self harm?

@alternativeto Forced MS account creation on Windows should be illegal.As should need for a Google account on Android to install updates or accessibility components, though it can be used.Or Amazon & Kindle.You can setup a Kobo without an account, or use a fake email as user.

@CarbonCarrot
@jayfell @alternativeto @raymaccarthy On my Android phone i use MicroG and Aurora store for anything that I need because of society, my lack of commitment to free software or peer pressure and get everything else from F-Droid or Obtainium.

35/46
@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie
@CarbonCarrot @jayfell @alternativeto How does that work for Android accessibility components or Google apps you can't remove?

36/46
@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie

37/46
@jayfell@social.trom.tf
@raymaccarthyMy phone has a working Google account, so unfortunately answer that part of your question As I said, using anonymous (at) google (dot) com, Aurora has updated apps from Play Store.@alternativeto

@alternativeto probably a good thing I dropped windows a few.months back. One account for multiple computers is extremely insecure.

@digitalstefan@fosstodon.org
@alternativeto I would pay up front for a physical copy of Workstation edition if it had the feature “ability to sign in with an online account must be enabled via group policy” I.e I’ve given you enough money that I am entitled to run completely offline if I so choose.

@energisch_@troet.cafe
@alternativeto deshalb, macht das nicht - nehmt Linux Mint, das ist vom Gefühl her sehr ähnlich in der Handhabung. Schmeißt den MS Mist raus.

@rq@river.group.lt
This change is part of the company’s broader “Local-only commands removal” initiative, reinforcing that bypassing account creation could lead to incomplete setups or potential security issues.Riiight.... because consequences of actions, performed proactively are of course NOT what the average user running these actions would ever expect, yeah, yeah, of course.@alternativeto

@hellomiakoda@pdx.social
@rq @alternativeto I had a customer who couldn't use his new PC because he didn't subscribe to internet access.Why someone offline didn't stick with their old machine, I'll never know

:yeshrug: Just reminds me that I need to complete my Linux dual build. Windows 11 hasn't really been a problem with me. I blame DMC4:SE on the devs.

I keep a windows install around just for random stuff that only works or only works well on Windows, but it's easily the #3 platform for me by a long shot behind MacOS and whatever random flavor of Linux I'm running.
