31 Horror Movies for October ’25
thanks breh! we moving here or we riding that coli train 'til the wheels fall off?

31 Days of Horror Marathon 2025 - Day Three:
3. *Free Choice* (VHS: Halloween)

I stan VHS and its combination of two of my favorite horror subgenres. VHS: Halloween is another quality installment, though I think it falls short of the top tier and would fit somewhere at the bottom of the second tier or top of the third tier of VHS movies.

Here's quick thoughts for each short:

Coochie Coochie Coo - I liked the haunted house vibe and the visuals on this one were creepy in an uncanney valley sort of way. It's chaotic and doesn't explain much, but the madness of it all works really well to set the tone.

Ut Supra Sic Infra - This was my favorite of the bunch. It's cleverly set up and has really dope visual effects while also hitting all its marks quickly and effectively. I wasn't shocked when to find out that the director for this is Paco Plaza, the man behind the Rec movies.

Fun Size - This one's by the creator of "Too Many Cooks," an absolute legend of an Adult Swim one-shot show (or more of just a title track but it has to be seen to be understood). It's batshyt crazy in the best way, combining the AS fratboy humor with some really gory stuff. It's the kind of fun and gnarly combination that great VHS shorts are made from.

Kidprint - I feel like it's impossible to have so many shorts in an anthology without having a dud or two. This was my dud. It tries to cram too much story into its short runtime, which winds up making the story a bit of a mess, detracting from some cool skin-grating effects.

Home Haunt - I feel like this one might be most people's favorite short from this VHS. It's a literal haunted house walk-through where the haunts all come to life. That gives it a diversity of creatures and kills that we speedrun through, and the effects live up to the chaotic setup.

Overall:
What keeps this VHS from breaking through to the top of the series is that none of the features are truly standout. Home Haunt and Ut Supra Sic Infra are really good, but I can definitely think of five shorts that I'd put above them. They'd probably break into the bottom of my top ten. On the bright side, there's only one short that I didn't like, and the consistent quality makes this a good VHS film.

One last note, it irks me that in spite there typically only being one foreign director per VHS movie, they always seem to go above and beyond. Safe Haven, Parallel Monsters, The Subject, and God of Death are quick to my mind as great shorts in the VHS series and Ut Supra Sic Infa is yet another standout.

Next Up: 4. Deadstream (Tubi, AMC+/Shudder)

First Omen got a little creepy towards the end :ehh: Overall, I thought it was a good movie.

Tonight, I'm going to watch Frankenhooker, lol. I know it had a cult following in the VHS era but I never had the opportunity to watch it... until now

Looking it up and I'm a little surprised that Frankenhooker isn't a Troma produced movie. Silly but fun, bad acting, titties, and gore lol I can see why it gained a cult following

On my latest watch went with the theme of Small Town Terror. The movie I picked was Super Dark Times. I'd seen it on a bunch of lists especially after Stranger Things got popular for it's nostalgia elements. This was more of a psychological thriller than a horror. But, don't think it matched the hype for the number of lists I've seen it featured on over the years. Solid cast though.

8. Salem's Lot
Classic Mini series - Tobe Hooper created a dread in this mini series that's unmatched.
"open the window... Mark, I'm your friend" :banderas:
its just creepy for creepiness sake.
the score for this is excellent
I haven't watched this in years and its just as enjoyable as the first time i watched it.
the main vampire was a force of nature, no words, just action. Different from the novel, but works in this.
the lack of hi def , just adds to the grit of this mini series.
the latest version that came out last year trimmed so much it just killed the story.

9. Puppet Master 3: Toulon's Revenge (1991) (Tubi, Prime, Pluto TV)
Didn't realize the son was Nog from Deep space 9 (RIP)
hands down, this is one of the best in the series.
Richard Lynch plays a quintessential bad guy and does very well in this flick,
Probably one of the Best Toulan roles in the series
This one feels more like a theater release than most of the others.
I will probably do a rewatch of the series in the future.

10. *Free Choice* VideoDrome

"LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH!"
( i have a t-shirt with this on it)
Its wild when you run into someone that knows what it is
n a side note - I also have a t-shirt with Black Phillip from the witch that reads
"wouldst thou like to live Deliciously?"
I like t-shirts with weird horror quotes on them.

when i first saw Videodrome, many moons ago, i did not get it
but as i got older , i saw it for just more than a body horror flick , its a very surreal flick.
basically telling the viewer to pull the plug and live life for themselves,
and a damning commentary on the dangers of mainstream media and how it can change you.
Cronenberg was ahead of his time and in his bag for this one.

11. The Omen (1976) (Philo)
Richard Donner has a damn near unfukwittable film director run from the 70's through the early 2000s.
The Omen is religious horror at its peak. the lighting, the score, the pacing , the use of religious imagery, the atmosphere & the overall sense of dread... it just works
The second doctor from Doctor from Doctor who stimi as the priest was aplus too. Nikka should have regenerated after his death scene. :russ:
the sequel is just as good, maybe better.

the only thing that brings is down, is the kid playing Damien, he's a pretentious little fukk and his voice gets on my nerves.

12. Pumpkinhead (1988) (Tubi, Prime, Philo)

this movie is extremely underrated , even within the Horror community , this movie does not get the props it deserved.
Lance Henriksen acted his a$$ off in this movie. You can feel his pain and regret all through the flick
the creature design was top notch as well.
This is another series that the original was not done justice by a slew of crappy sequels.

13. Dead Sushi (2012) (plex, tubi)
Fukkery for Fukkerys' sake
Japanese ( non ghost) horror is an acquired taste,
Lots of gore , corny humor and the FX were top notch, the fight scenes were surprisingly well done too
its a good break from all the serious flicks we have been viewing.

14. Carnival of Souls (1962) (HBO Max, Tubi, Plex)
A lot of people call it the definitive neo - noir horror film

Another very atmospheric flick, well acted -
it did drag in certain spots though and felt like an extended Twilight zone episode
if it was directed by David Lynch. You can spot the similarities between this and Lynch's Lost highway
the way the beginning and the end are very abrupt and in your face as compared to the deliberate slow build up used in the rest of the film is jarring.

Just wrapping up my latest watch. Theme was clowns so I used IT Chapter 2. This movie didn't need to be no damn near 3 hours. Some of the flashback shyt was just dragging out time, we didn't need it. Part 1 was a much better film, but outside of run time and the anticlimactic ending, Part 2 is alright. I'm sure I'll watch it again in a few years.

Currently watching Amityville The Awakening. This one is filling in my theme for Haunted House. Pretty solid cast considering that it's easily a direct to video feature. But it's got Red from that 70s show. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jennifer Morrison who actually look like they could be sisters so hat tip to the casting person there. The young stars are Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan and McKinna Grace who is in the Ghostbuster Revival movies. Fits the bill for a 90 minute popcorn horror watch.
