What makes Bluesky different: it’s open source, so anyone can contribute to building the experience they want. And even if you build a whole new app, the protocol means you can migrate with your data, identity, and relationships intact.
[QUOTED POST]

@str4d.xyz
The eternally-great thing about open source: if something doesn't exist, and the devs don't have time to work on it themselves, you can just implement it for them!
If they decide not to take it as-is, you've still helped explore the design space.
And if they don't accept it, but you need it, fork!

I'll believe that we're safe when there are real competing servers run by other orgs that I can log into and I can take my online existence from
BSky.social over to a competing server without losing anything.
Until then this is still a benevolent dictatorship and you could be replaced with a Musk.

It’s true! For example I heard one disgruntled user was so annoyed with the default Discover feed that they implemented this
[QUOTED POST]

@bsky.app
If you're a custom feed creator, you can now enable "show more" and "show less" buttons in your feeds. This gives people using your feed a simple way to tell you what they love — and what they want less of.

Why has there been a (perceived) downturn in user response but a larger censorship response?

Reminder that what Jay also means by this is that we're 'free to just leave' if we find that Bluesky is suppressing posts, boosting media outlets' misinfo, and treating trans users poorly. Because they don't wanna hear that.
bsky.app/profile/jay....
[QUOTED POST]

@jay.bsky.team
We knew from the start we can’t get everything right. Moderation is a hard problem, and it’s impossible to please everyone. So we built a protocol where you always have the right to leave. If you don’t trust us, or don’t like our decisions, you deserve the right to choose an alternative.
28/52

trevorbramble.com
Jay, respectfully, this statement is dismissive of the many people who are not software developers or otherwise can't set up their own collaborating service. And it certainly isn't redeeming the response given to people objecting to the mass bans this week. This makes Bluesky look LESS different.

34/52

phill.hallambaker.com
No, it goes beyond the open source requirement, it is an open service.
Signal is an open source application but it only really works if you have an account with the same service as the person you want to reach which in practice means it only works with the closed Signal service.
35/52

phill.hallambaker.com
The core of being an open service is that users have a choice of service *and they can change that choice any time they like without significant cost*
What I hate about Facebook is that every minute I spend there increases the cost of switching to a different service.
36/52

phill.hallambaker.com
That is why I have invested so much time in @nyone which binds a contact card to a DNS Handle (or QR code) with some light cryptography that allows contacts to update securely.
I have been with gmail since it started (I wrote the first Webmail, of course I got an early invite).
37/52

phill.hallambaker.com
Moving from gmail would sever thousands of contacts for me even though I have my own personal domain and have been using a mail forwarder for over a decade. If gmail was bought by Space NAZI, I would be hosed.
But not if everyone was using @nyone, then I could change email provider without cost.
38/52

raiderking.bsky.social
In theory, creators of banned media can move to another service.
In practice, the vast majority of users on the AT Protocol will be unable to see content banned by Bluesky. Mod actions on Bsky will have a profound effect on a user's ability to engage the protocol itself, acting like a shadowban.
